Davis Freeberg's Digital Connection: Nintendo, Wii Have Liftoff

    Davis,
Welcome to the club! Sounds like you now understand that the Wii is about having fun and the most successful games for it will be the ones that use the wiimote controller to their fullest potential. The Wii is definitely fun and appeals to a larger group then just your typical console gamers. I also can't wait for the new Madden coming soon for the Wii - that is supposed to be very very nice.

As you mentioned, the Wii is lacking in graphics, CPU power etc., but it still beats the competition with its interface. Wouldn't it be nice if you could cross the Wii's interface and ease of use with the Xbox 360's graphics, ability to act as an extender etc.? Do that and you have the holy grail of gaming in my opinion.

I can totally see how Xbox would be good for serious gamers, but where casual gamers would be more interested in playing the Wii. Already, I want to throw a party, so that I can see what it's like playing 2 player games. The Wii just feels more interactive, I'm sure that it would be the bigger hit at a party.

Someday, we'll see Microsoft and Sony introduce their own human powered controllers, but there are some games where I think the classic control style might work better. In the meantime though, I'm pleased as punch to be able to mess around on the Wii, while the other console makers are figuring out how to copy Nintendo.

Oh and the extender functionality is something I'm really interested in testing out on the Wii. I plan on hacking it for DivX support this weekend and will likely do a post on the results.

I've got so much crap here (some mine, some to review), I just can't add another toy this month. Maybe next month or September. Besides, I hear the new Mario and Metroid games are coming out this fall anyway.

Sure wish my Xbox 360 could play (or receive streamed) DivX videos. My original Xbox running XBMC has no prob with that. :/

I have console envy. You saw this right?

I did not see that, but it's interesting. I'm not surprised, a $100 can motivate people a lot. Still, this will be a problem for the Xbox and HD-DVD to deal with, not Nintendo, they are already at $250 now and are the only ones making a profit on the hardware. I think they've got the low end of gaming locked up. Even at $500, that's still a big nut for a lot of kids to pay.

Sony will have to fight with Softie over the high end part of the market, but I don't see Xbox going away without a fight. What has surprised me even more, has been how well the PS2 still sells. If they can get the PS3, down to those kinds of price levels, than I'll start to worry about our bet.

Your description of the Wii has renewed my consumer desire! That and playing until my body gave out with a friend of mine last weekend. I've been on a hunt for all things Wii since. I'm not sure what I'm waiting for. How you can live without Gamefly with multiple consoles? Are you rich? I'd be in the poorhouse with all the new stuff coming out over the next couple of months without them. New distribution center has so far proven effective in speeding up the shipping process and the latest addition of Atari classics for the PSP set to release in November has pretty much got me married to them. If I was completely shameless I'd suggest you sign up again with me as a reference to nab that free Wii they're dangling as an incentive for getting people on board but we haven't even been officially introduced so I'll refrain... for now. Happy Wii'ing!
